# Description of company roles

## Overview: company roles

Company roles control what a user can do across the whole CxPlanner license - creating projects, managing users, viewing the agreement, and creating templates - which is used when you decide who can administer the company rather than only work inside one project.

Project roles are different and are described in [Description of project roles for users](https://help.cxplanner.com/en-us/article/description-of-project-roles-for-users-1enj8s0/).

* Your role must be **Company Admin** to assign company roles.
* You can find the menu at Profile icon - **Users**.
* This changes company-wide permissions for the selected user. It does not change their project roles.

## How to assign a company role

1. Open the profile icon - **Users**.
2. Find the user who needs a company role change.
3. Set the company role to **Administrator**, **Moderator**, or **User**.
4. Confirm whether the user still needs separate project roles in each project.

## How company roles compare

**Project roles** define permissions inside a specific project, such as creating tasks or opening project settings. **Company roles** define license-wide actions such as creating projects or editing company settings.

## Results: choosing a company role

* Use **Administrator** for people who manage users, security, and company settings
* Use **Moderator** for people who need to create projects and templates without full company admin rights
* Use **User** for people who only work inside projects they are invited to

## Troubleshooting: company roles

| Problem | Cause | Solution |
| ---- |
| User cannot create a new project | Company role is User | Change their company role to **Moderator** or **Administrator** under **Users** |
| Cannot manage another user's role | Your company role is not Administrator | Ask a **Company Admin** to open **Users** and change the role |
| Changing a project role did not unlock company actions | Project roles and company roles are separate | Edit the company role for license-wide actions, and the project role for in-project permissions |
