# How do I delete a single line item on a checklist?

## Overview: delete a checklist line item

Deleting a line item removes an unused checklist item from a checklist or template, which is used when cleaning unused steps from a test script without changing completed work.

To clear Pass, Fail, or N/A on a line item first, see Reset a line item / checklist item.

* Your role must be the checklist responsible user, or **Manager** or **Admin**.
* You can find the menu at the open checklist - **Menu** - **Edit and add items**.
* This removes the selected line item permanently from the checklist.

|| Only the checklist responsible user, or users with the project role **Manager** or **Admin**, can delete line items.

|| You cannot delete line items that are already checked, commented on, or have attached files. Deletion cannot be undone.

## How to delete a checklist line item

1. Open the checklist.
2. Click **Menu**.
3. Click **Edit and add items**.
4. Click the **trashcan** icon on the line item to delete it, or the **pen** icon to edit it.

## Results: delete a checklist line item

* The unchecked line item is removed immediately
* Deleted line items cannot be restored
* Checked, commented, or file-attached line items stay in place until reset

## Troubleshooting: delete a checklist line item

| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Cannot delete the line item | Your role is below Manager and you are not responsible for the checklist | Ask a **Manager** or **Admin** to delete it, or get assigned as responsible |
| Deleted item still visible | Browser shows a cached view | Refresh the page |
| Cannot delete a checked line item | Line items with status, comments, or files cannot be deleted | Reset the line item first, then delete it |
