# Remove custom columns in asset module

## Overview: remove custom columns

Custom attribute columns let projects capture equipment data beyond standard asset fields. You can hide columns for your own view, or permanently remove a custom attribute as **Admin**, which is used when a field is no longer needed or was created by mistake.

Creating custom attributes is done in **Types: Assets** and requires **Manager** or higher.

* Your role can be any role to show or hide columns. Removal requires **Admin**.
* You can find visibility controls at Assets overview - **view settings** - **Visible columns**, and removal from the column menu.
* This can permanently delete custom field data from every asset.

||| Removing a custom attribute is permanent and deletes all data stored in it for every asset. This cannot be undone.

## How to show, hide, or remove custom columns

### Show or hide a column

1. Open the **Asset** module and click **Assets overview**.
2. Click **view settings** and select **Visible columns**.
3. Toggle each column you want to show or hide.
4. Click **Apply** or close the panel.

### Remove a custom attribute

1. Open **Assets overview**.
2. Open the column context menu on a column header.
3. Click **Remove Column**.
4. Choose the field in **Select field to remove**.
5. In **Remove custom field**, type **delete**.
6. Confirm. The success message shows the deleted field name.

## Results: visibility and removal behavior

| User hides a column | Hidden for that user only |
| Changes saved as a custom view | Shared with users who load that view |
| Export | Includes custom columns regardless of visibility |
| After removal | Column and values are gone; assets remain |

## Troubleshooting: custom columns

| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Add attribute is unavailable | Project role is below Manager | Ask a **Manager** or **Admin** to create the attribute, or request a role upgrade |
| Remove Column is missing | Project role is not Admin | Ask a project **Admin** to remove the field |
| Message says no custom fields to remove | No custom attributes exist on this overview | Confirm the field was created as a custom attribute and still appears in the table |
| Field still appears after removal | Request failed or another user already removed it | Refresh, retry the removal, and confirm with a project **Admin** if it persists |
| Removed the wrong field | Removal is permanent | Recreate the attribute; original values cannot be recovered |
| Needed column is missing | Hidden in your view, or scoped to another asset type | Show it in Visible columns, and confirm you are viewing assets of the correct type |
