# Rename an asset type

The asset type rename feature in the Asset module lets you change the name of an existing asset type - for example **AHU**, **FCU**, or **Generator** - directly from **Types: Assets**, without recreating the type or moving any equipment. This is useful when a type was created with a typo or an overly generic name during an Excel import, or when project needs evolve and a type like **Generator** needs to become **Diesel Generator - Emergency** for clearer reporting.

|| Only users with the project role **Manager** or higher can rename an asset type.

## Rename an asset type in Types: Assets
1. Open your project and go to the **Asset** module.
2. In the left sidebar, click **Types: Assets**.
3. Locate the asset type you want to rename in the list.
4. Click the pencil icon next to the asset type name.
5. Edit the name in the field that appears.
6. Save your changes.

## What happens to existing assets after a rename
Assets, checklists, and records already using that asset type keep all their existing data. Renaming only changes the display name shown across the project - it does not move, duplicate, or disconnect any assets currently assigned to that type.
