# Upload a New Version of a File

## Overview: upload a new file version

Version upload in the Files module replaces the visible file with a new revision while keeping older versions in history, which is used when drawings or documents are corrected but audit history must remain.

* Your role must be responsible for the folder, or **Manager** or higher.
* You can find the menu at Files module - upload with the same filename, or right-click - **File details**.
* This adds a new version to the existing file record. Older versions stay available from the version number next to the filename.

|| Only users responsible for the folder, or with project role Manager or higher, can upload new file versions.

## How to upload a new version of a file

### Upload a file with the same name
1. Go to the **Files** module.
2. Upload the updated file with the exact same filename as the existing file.
3. Confirm CxPlanner saves it as a new version.

* Click the version number next to the filename to view past versions
* The main list continues to show one filename for the current version

## Troubleshooting: upload a new file version

| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Cannot upload a new version | Your folder responsibility or project role is too low | Ask a project **Admin** to grant folder responsibility or raise your role to **Manager** |
| Uploaded file created a separate file instead of a version | Filename differed from the existing file | Use the exact same filename, or upload through **File details** |
| Cannot see older versions | Version history is restricted or not opened | Click the version number next to the filename, or ask a project **Admin** for access |
