CxAI nameplate: Enriching assets with nameplate photo
Overview
How do I enrich an asset with data from a nameplate photo in CxPlanner?
The CxAI nameplate extraction feature in the Assets Module allows you to automatically populate asset attributes by photographing or uploading a nameplate image, which is used on-site when equipment data is not available in advance or needs to be captured directly from the physical asset.
This guide covers extracting and injecting nameplate data into an existing asset using CxAI - for manually editing asset attributes or importing asset data from Excel, see the relevant guides for those methods. Available to any user with access to the asset on the project.
When and why to use this
On commissioning sites, assets are often created in CxPlanner before all technical data is available. Once on-site, a technician can photograph the equipment nameplate and let CxAI extract the data automatically rather than transcribing it by hand.
- When this action is needed - the asset exists in CxPlanner but has missing attributes, and the technical data is only available on the physical nameplate on-site
- What the system does - CxAI analyzes the image and extracts all recognizable fields (manufacturer, serial number, model, category, system, CFM, motor kilowatt, pole count, and more), presenting them for review before any data is written to the asset
- Limitations - extraction quality depends on image clarity and nameplate legibility; if CxAI is uncertain about a value, it will show a dropdown with candidate options for you to select manually
How to
- Open the Assets Module and locate the asset you want to enrich.
- Tap or click the asset to open it. The left side shows asset details; the right side shows Attributes.
- On the Attributes panel, click AI auto-update.
- Click Extract data from image.
- On mobile: this opens your camera directly.
- On desktop: this opens your file browser so you can select a saved nameplate photo.
- Select or capture the nameplate image. CxPlanner sends it to CxAI for processing.
- Review the extracted fields. CxAI will list all values it could identify.
- If CxAI was uncertain about a value, a dropdown appears - select the correct option.
- Any field you want to add as a new attribute can be created by clicking Create.
- To write all extracted values to the asset in one step, click Update all existing attributes.
- Alternatively, click individual attributes one by one to update selectively and verify each value in the asset view as you go.
- Confirm the data has been written. A Data added confirmation appears with a timestamp, and the global asset overview will now display the populated data.

Behavior and results
Outcome | Detail |
|---|---|
Attributes updated | Extracted values are written directly to the matching asset attribute fields |
New attributes created | Fields found in the image that do not yet exist as attributes can be added on the spot via Create |
Uncertain values | CxAI shows a dropdown with candidate matches when confidence is low - you choose the correct value |
Audit trail | Each update is logged with a timestamp visible in the asset detail view and the global asset overview |
Mobile support | Full feature available on mobile; the camera opens automatically instead of a file browser |
Troubleshooting
Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
CxAI extracts no data or very few fields | Nameplate image is blurry, poorly lit, or cropped | Retake the photo with better lighting and ensure the full nameplate is in frame |
Extracted values are incorrect | Nameplate text is partially obscured or worn | Use the dropdown options CxAI suggests, or update the attribute manually after extraction |
"Extract data from image" button is not visible | The asset may not have the AI auto-update option enabled, or you lack access | Contact your project Admin to confirm CxAI is enabled and your access level is correct |
Attributes do not update after clicking individual fields | A sync or connectivity issue on-site | Check your connection and retry; the action can also be completed once back in an area with coverage |
